“Why do we hate Cuba so much?”
And so began a fifteen-minute conversation about current and historical politics as I drove Scarlett to SCMEA rehearsal this morning.
We talked about the Cold War.
We talked about the Revolutionary War.
About how power corrupts.
And about how some people are great military leaders but not very good civilian leaders.
We talked about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
About the Persian Gulf War.
About the powerful using slogans to get the people to send their children off to die in battle.
About seventh-graders having political debates in social studies class.
Scarlett told me she stood up in the middle of health class to call out a kid who said, “What is that?” when a picture of a girl who’d been disfigured in a drunk-driving accident appeared on the screen.
“She’s a human being.”
“Thank you,” said the rookie health teacher.
I told her she was, literally, an upstander. #proudpapa
We talked. We listened. We laughed. We enjoyed each other’s company. She let me kiss her on the cheek when I dropped her off.
Gotta take advantage of those car rides.
Maybe we’re gonna be alright.
